Ensure Your Coverage Is Adequate for Summer Storms in Mendon, MA

8/25/2024 (Permalink)

SERVPRO working with green text box and orange SERVPRO logo To protect your investment, it’s crucial to ensure your insurance coverage is adequate for these storm-related damages.

Summer storms can bring a variety of hazards, including high winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning strikes, all of which can cause significant damage to your home. To protect your investment, it’s crucial to ensure your insurance coverage is adequate for these storm-related damages. Here’s what you need to know about reviewing your insurance policy and preparing for potential claims in Mendon, MA

Review Your Insurance Policy

Understand Your Coverage: Start by carefully reviewing your homeowners insurance policy to understand what is and isn’t covered. Key areas to focus on include:

  1. Wind Damage: Ensure your policy covers damage caused by high winds, including damage to your roof, siding, and windows.
  2. Water Damage: Check if your policy covers water damage from heavy rainfall or flooding. Many standard policies do not cover flood damage, so you may need to purchase a separate flood insurance policy.
  3. Fire Damage: Verify that your policy includes coverage for fire damage, including fires caused by lightning strikes or downed power lines.

Assess Coverage Limits and Deductibles: Make sure the coverage limits are sufficient to rebuild your home and replace your belongings in case of a total loss. Also, review your deductibles to understand what you’ll need to pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in.

Consider Additional Coverage: Depending on your location and specific risks, you might need additional coverage, such as:

  1. Flood Insurance: If you live in a flood-prone area, purchasing flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurer is essential.
  2. Windstorm Insurance: In regions prone to hurricanes or severe windstorms, additional windstorm insurance may be necessary.
  3. Extended Replacement Cost Coverage: This type of coverage can provide extra funds if the cost to rebuild your home exceeds your policy limits due to increased construction costs after a widespread disaster.

Document and Photograph Belongings

Inventory Your Home: Creating a detailed inventory of your possessions is crucial for filing an insurance claim. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Make a List: Document all valuable items, including electronics, appliances, furniture, clothing, and jewelry. Include descriptions, purchase dates, and estimated values.
  2. Take Photographs and Videos: Capture clear photos and videos of your belongings. This visual evidence can be invaluable when proving ownership and condition of items.
  3. Store Documentation Safely: Keep copies of your inventory list, receipts, photographs, and videos in a safe place, such as a cloud storage service or a fireproof safe.

By taking these steps, you can ensure your insurance coverage is adequate to protect your home and belongings from the impacts of summer storms. Regularly reviewing and updating your policy, along with properly documenting your possessions, will provide peace of mind and financial security in the event of storm-related damage.

3 Top Causes of Fall Water in Natick Milford, MA Damage

8/7/2023 (Permalink)

Green background with orange SERVPRO logo and title. Regular inspections, proper maintenance, and timely repairs are key to safeguarding our homes and ensuring a worry-free autumn experience.

The fall season poses unique challenges for homeowners, with rainfall, fallen leaves, and temperature fluctuations leading to various sources of water damage. Here are the three top causes of fall water damage and how to prevent them to safeguard our homes during this season.

The abundance of falling leaves, twigs, and debris during autumn can easily accumulate in gutters and downspouts, obstructing the proper flow of rainwater. When gutters are clogged, rainwater cannot be efficiently directed away from the roof and foundation of the house, causing potential leaks and water seepage.

Prevention Tips:

  • Regularly clean gutters and downspouts, especially during the fall season.
  • Trim trees near your house to minimize the number of leaves falling onto the roof and gutters.
  • Check for any signs of damage to the gutters and downspouts, and promptly repair or replace any compromised sections.
  • As temperatures fluctuate during fall, any cracks or gaps in the exterior of your home can become potential entry points for water.
  • Inspect the exterior of your home thoroughly, paying close attention to vulnerable areas like the roof, siding, and foundation.
  • Ensure that the seals around windows and doors are intact.
  • Maintain proper ventilation in attics and crawl spaces to regulate temperature and humidity, reducing the risk of moisture-related damage.

Clogged gutters and downspouts, water seepage through cracks and gaps, and a leaking roof are three common culprits that can wreak havoc during this season. Regular inspections, proper maintenance, and timely repairs are key to safeguarding our homes and ensuring a worry-free autumn experience.

What Should You Do If  A Grill Is On Fire?

5/16/2023 (Permalink)

Orange background with text and SERVPRO logo Remember to always be mindful of grill safety and take the necessary precautions to prevent accidents from happening.

It’s important to keep safety in mind when using a grill. One of the most common safety hazards when grilling is a fire breaking out. If a grill fire does occur, it’s important to know what to do to stay safe. Here are the steps to take if a grill is on fire:

  • Turn off the burners: If the fire is contained in one area of the grill, turn off the burners in that area. This will help prevent the fire from spreading.
  • Close the lid: If the fire is larger and cannot be contained to one area, close the lid of the grill. This will help cut off the oxygen supply to the fire and reduce the flames.
  • Disconnect the fuel source: If you are using a propane grill, turn off the propane tank and disconnect it from the grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, remove the charcoal from the grill.
  • Use a fire extinguisher: If the fire is still burning, use a fire extinguisher to put it out. Make sure you use the correct type of fire extinguisher for the type of fire you are dealing with. For grill fires, use a Class B fire extinguisher, which is designed for flammable liquids and gases.
  • Call for help: If the fire is too large to be put out with a fire extinguisher, call the fire department immediately.
  • Do not use water: Never use water to put out a grease fire on a grill. This can cause the fire to spread and create a dangerous situation.
  • Wait before cleaning: After the fire has been put out, wait until the grill has cooled down before cleaning it. This will prevent any remaining grease or debris from reigniting.

Remember to always be mindful of grill safety and take the necessary precautions to prevent accidents from happening.

How To Get Rid Of Odor

2/15/2023 (Permalink)

mold with overlay box and SERVPRO logo Odors can be unpleasant and difficult to remove, especially if they are deeply embedded in fabrics or other materials.

Odors can be unpleasant and difficult to remove, especially if they are deeply embedded in fabrics or other materials. Fortunately, there are several effective methods for odor removal:

  1. Ventilate the area: One of the easiest and most effective ways to remove odors is to ventilate the area. This can be done by opening windows and doors to let in fresh air, using a fan to circulate the air, or simply turning on your air conditioning or heating system to help remove any stagnant or stale air.
  2. Baking soda: Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that can help remove odors from a variety of surfaces. Simply sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda onto the affected area and let it sit for several hours or overnight. Then, vacuum or sweep up the baking soda and any residual odor.
  3. White vinegar: White vinegar is another effective natural deodorizer that can help remove stubborn odors. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and apply to the affected area. Let it sit for several hours, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  4. Activated charcoal: Activated charcoal is a powerful odor absorber that can help eliminate even the strongest of smells. Simply place a few pieces of activated charcoal in a container and leave it in the affected area for several hours or overnight. The charcoal will absorb the odor and leave the air smelling fresh and clean.
  5. Enzyme cleaners: Enzyme cleaners are specially designed to break down organic matter and eliminate odors. They can be used on a variety of surfaces, including carpets, upholstery, and clothing. Simply apply the enzyme cleaner to the affected area, let it sit for several hours, then wash or rinse as directed.
  6. Professional cleaning: If all else fails, it may be time to call in the professionals. Professional cleaning services have the tools and expertise to remove even the toughest odors, whether they are in your carpets, furniture, or air ducts. They can also help identify the source of the odor and provide advice on how to prevent it from returning in the future.

Whether you opt for natural remedies or professional cleaning services, it is important to take action as soon as possible to prevent the odor from getting worse and spreading to other areas of your home.

A fire can be a devastating experience, leaving destruction in its wake. However, with the right steps and the right professionals, it's possible to restore your home or business to its pre-fire condition.

Step 1: Ensure Safety

Before entering your property, make sure it's safe to do so. Check with the fire department or your insurance company to see if it's okay to enter. If it is, wear protective gear, such as a mask and gloves, to protect yourself from soot and other harmful substances.

Step 2: Contact Your Insurance Company

As soon as possible, contact your insurance company to report the fire and start the claims process. They will guide you through the next steps and help you determine what is covered under your policy.

Step 3: Contact a Fire Restoration Professional

It's important to work with a professional fire restoration company as soon as possible. These professionals have the experience and equipment needed to properly clean up and restore your property. They can also work with your insurance company to ensure that everything is done correctly and efficiently.

Commercial Carpet Drying

1/7/2023 (Permalink)

man cleaning carpet SERVPRO of Natick/Milford dries carpets during the restoration process.

SERVPRO of Natick/Milford comes across many materials during commercial and residential restorations. One of the common features in buildings is carpet. Preserving this material is a primary goal in every restoration task to reduce costs.

It can be a difficult task to dry commercial carpets for Natick businesses. We make sure to be meticulous in these efforts to restore the most, rather than throw away. Two things we look out for in carpet drying is Backing Separation (Delamination) and Latex Deterioration as we dry carpets in offices, hallways, and common areas.

Every carpet has two backings, primary and secondary. Latex is the adhesive used by manufacturers to attach the individual fibers to the primary. The second layer of latex holds the backings together. When water remains on the carpet for too long, the latex begins to break down; this results in the backings separating, and the fibers coming loose. To prevent this from occurring, we first remove the water. Technicians use pumps to remove the majority of water. When most water has been removed, we switch to extraction wands; which are vacuums, that draw out water from carpets and carpet pads without damaging them. As they perform the task, our technicians are trained to watch for any signs of delamination and deterioration.

Since overly aggressive extraction damages carpet, there will always be a small amount of moisture left trapped. Since most commercial carpets do not utilize a carpet pad, it is rarely necessary for us to remove one. To completely dry the carpet, we use a combination of air movers, fans, and dehumidifiers to remove the last trace of moisture.

We carefully examine the carpet and then lift a section at opposite ends of a room or hallway. This technique is know as "floating" in the industry. At the entry point, we place an air mover to force warm, dry air under the carpet which pushes out the damp, colder air. To speed the process, we set up a fan to draw the damp air out, which makes the air-mover more efficient. If the room or hallway is extremely humid, we use a dehumidifier to draw moisture from the air. Our SERVPRO technicians take pride in working around an active work environment, reducing disruptions to our clients' customers and their employees.

Drying out your business is a relatively simple task, but it is time-consuming. Restoring carpets and other property needs to be handled by a professional service to avoid secondary damage. SERVPRO of Natick/Milford has decades of experience and stands ready to support our fellow business owners. One strategy we use to attack the many ways that disaster can effect your property is to contain the area. It is essential that we prevent the drifting and wafting of smoke, soot, mold spores or bacteria. If they are not contained, every inch of surface area in your home can and will become infested. By using six millimeter polyethylene barriers and sealing the perimeter of the area that has been damaged by a fire, we can keep various residues in check as well as any odor that has presented from the situation. HEPA filters are used to force contaminants through and vent their air to the outdoors, ensure that your air quality returns to normal levels.

Industrial Cleaners

Our certified technicians are trained in each specific method of removal for the various types contaminants. This will both, prevent any damage to the interior and its contents as well as ensure the affected area is completely free of contaminants.  Our goal at SERVPRO of Natick/Milford is to restore instead of replace where and whenever possible.

Innovative Technology Against Odors

Cleaning the surfaces may remove any and all contamination but it does not always result in the elimination of odors. The Disaster Remediation Teams at SERVPRO of Natick/Milford have access to multiple solutions to remove the odors. Thermal fogging, ozone machines, and hydroxyl generators are all professional grade solutions that we use, not to mask, but eliminate odors that disasters leave behind. Update on Nor'Easter (02/01/2021)

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

At 5 pm today, on February 1st, we're still in the thick of this current nor'easter. Snowfall rates this evening will increase at rates of 1-2 inches per hour as the temperatures drop below freezing. This will allow the bulk of the snow to accumulate. The snow will be thick, heavy and pasty. All of southern NE is under a winter storm warning except for Cape Cod and the Islands where warm air has intruded near the surface, causing the snow to turn to rain. In fact, the rain-snow line seems to be pressing westward both north of Boston and along the Southshore.

Tonight, in Hopkinton/Middlesex county, expect the snow to transition to an icy mix for a couple of hours, followed by rain. Tomorrow morning, areas north and west of Boston will experience sleet mixing with snow on the roadways. Conditions will improve as the storm pulls away to the north. Wednesday should improve with flurries possible in the am. Temps begin to warm into the 40's on Thursday and Friday. Another storm system is possible by early next week. We are following this current nor'easter very closely and will continue to post timely updates. As always, we are here to assist with any damages caused by snow, rain, winds, or any other occurrence. Do you have questions about our services? Check out our website, or call! We are here to help!
