If your emergency supply kit is already stocked, make sure that the items are not expired. For example, are the batteries still working?

Make sure to cut back trees and shrubs that are too close to your house, so it can prevent damage in storm season.

Fire Safety Tips for Fall

9/5/2022 (Permalink)

Orange background with text and SERVPRO logo Fall is a great time for many people to enjoy the beautiful crisp weather, but along with that comes several dangers especially fires.

When the weather turns cold most people spend more time inside their homes. This is simply because people are using fireplaces, furnaces, and heaters to keep warm. However, make sure to understand the dangers that can come of it.

Here are some tips to help prevent fires:

  1. Service Your Furnace: Before the cold winter weather sets in, call your heating and cooling company to service your furnace. It is good to have an inspection to make sure everything is in working order and there are no leaks.
  2. Use Fireplaces Safely: Keep fire in its proper place by using a fireplace screen. This will keep sparks from flying out of the fireplace.
  3. Use Caution with Space Heaters: A space heater can be an effective way to warm up a chilly room. Your space heater may require venting, so make sure you have vented it to the outdoors. There should be least three feet of empty area around space heaters.
  4. Reconsider Leaf Burning: Burning leaves produces dangerous and cancer-causing chemicals. Homeowners should avoid disposing of leaves this way.
  5. Exercise Candle Caution: Candles are a great way to give a room some light, and also smell. They can also cause fires. Never leave candles burning unattended.
  6. Change Smoke Alarm Batteries: It is wise to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when you turn back your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
  7. Safety Tips for Fall Driving: There's nothing more beautiful than a fall drive, but weather can cause dangerous roads.

It is time to get your house in shape for the cooler months ahead. Here are some home maintenance ideas that will keep your home running in peak condition all winter long.

Exterior Maintenance

  • You will want to check the foundation for cracks and caulk such as where pipes or wires enter the house; this can save you money in the long run.
  • Make sure you have storm windows and doors and remove screens.
  • Inspect exterior walls to see if any paint is peeling or blistering on the house or outbuildings. Peeling paint is a sign that the existing paint film is failing.
  • Make sure the roof is in good shape and make sure there are not any lose shingles. If not taken care of, damage can happen with deterioration to insulation, wood, and drywall.

Interior Maintenance

  • Air from windows and doors is easy to find, make sure to apply weather stripping and caulk to areas that have air venting issues.
  • Change the direction of your ceiling fan to create an upward draft that redistributes warm air from the ceiling.
  • Check basement windows for drafts, loose frames, or cracked panes.
  • Vacuum internal parts of air conditioners.
  • Clean your humidifiers regularly during the heating season. Bacteria and spores can develop in a dirty water tank resulting in unclean moisture.

September 11th is Patriot Day. It is an observed holiday in the United States. This day is to commemorate the lives of those who were lost in the terrorist attacks in 2001.

On December 18th, 2001, this was declared Patriot Day. It is a yearly proclamation requesting that all flags be flown at half-staff.

Americans are asked to honor those lost with a moment of silence at 8:46 AM, Eastern Standard Time. This is the time that the first airplane struck the World Trade Center.

Please join us today remembering those at this designation time.

Happy Labor Day From SERVPRO Natick Milford

Labor Day occurs on Monday, September 6. This is a day to tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers.

It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century. It later became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day is an annual celebration of workers and their achievements originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

At the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States on average Americans worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks just to make a basic living. Even children as young as 5 or 6 were working in mills, factories, and mines across the country.

People of all ages were faced extremely unsafe working conditions, sanitary facilities, and even breaks.

Now it is meant to symbolize the end of summer for many Americans. Typically this is celebrated with parties, street parades, and festivals.

We hope that you have a healthy and safe Labor Day weekend and are able to enjoy time off.

Mask Mandate In Place For Natick, MA Municipal Buildings

brick building Beginning August 16th, 2021, all Natick Municipal Buildings will be requiring masks to be worn.

Monday, August 16th, was the beginning of a new mask mandate for all town-operated facilities in Natick, MA. Buildings such as the Town Hall, public library, Natick Public Schools, fire station, and senior center are all places where the town is requiring masks to be worn. Although Governor Baker made a statement that he would not reinstate a mask order statewide, many Massachusetts communities have instated certain masking requirements. Framingham, Hudson, and Marlborough are all districts that will be requiring masks in schools this fall. Masking requirements are being left up to singular municipalities in regards to school this fall. With anyone younger than 12 not yet eligible for the COVID vaccine, and with the delta strain of the virus causing a resurgence in cases, some towns and cities are requiring face coverings regardless of vaccination status. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that everyone age 2 and older wear a mask when returning to school this year, regardless of their vaccination status. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends all K-12 students, teachers and staff members wear masks while indoors this fall, regardless of vaccination status.

Dover, MA and Sherborn, MA Area Home Prices Increase

grey house Housing prices have increased over 10% since the beginning of the pandemic

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, home prices have been up over 10 percent from what they were in the Dover, MA, Sherborn, MA, and Holliston, MA areas. The large increase in home prices has led to an expensive market, being awful for buyers but incredible for sellers. From February to March 2021, housing prices increased 2.61 percent in the Cambridge-Newton-Framingham MA area, being up overall 15.7 percent from March 2020. The Warren Group reported that the median sale price for a single family home in Massachusetts during the month of April increased to the highest it's ever been at $508,000. Condominium sales are also almost in the $500,000 threshold, coming in in April at a median of $475,000. Higher prices were not keeping buyers away, condo sales  in April were up more than 27% compared to April 2019. The Covid-caused crisis has so far unfolded in the opposite direction of what one would predict in a recession. The improved economy and millennials entering their peak homebuying years are fueling a residential housing boom. Low mortgage rates, combined with an increase in working from home as a result of the pandemic, have spurred a surge in housing demand, particularly in lower-density suburbs. In 2020, more existing homes were sold than in any other year since 2006.

Natick's Friends of the Fourth group has announced their roll up of activities being offered on the Fourth of  July! With a house decorating contest and a scavenger hunt, the community of Natick can look forward to an exciting day of honoring the USA's independence and taking part in some fun activities. The House Decorating Contest will take place between July 1st-5th, and the group is inviting the town to decorate their porches and front lawns into 4th of July floats, in lieu of a parade. With the COVID-19 pandemic still happening, the town of Natick has decided to not host the annual parade and instead have the house decorating contest as a way of celebrating the holiday and keeping everyone safe. The scavenger hunt will be a fun activity for all ages to explore Natick and learn about the town's history. Decisions To Be Made Over Future Of Charles River Dam in Natick, MA

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

waterfall with rocks around it The South Natick Dam of conversation.

The town of Natick, MA has held meetings to reach a consensus of the opinions of residents for what the future of the Charles River Dam is. Natick has two options for the dam, which is out of compliance with state safety regulations: demolish the spillway, or attempt to repair the dam. Since 1934 when the dam was erected for recreation in the town of Natick, the structure has more recently caused a safety impairment due to the fact that the earthen part of the dam is slowly deteriorating. To repair, the town would have to remove over 60 trees from the earthen part of the dam and fix the sloped area of it. If the town removes the spillway, the level of the river upstream would be lowered, and destroy the beautiful waterfall not too far away. There would be environmental benefits though, such as algae growth being regulated and fish being able to swim upstream.
